Project launching: October 2018 (with annual renewal)
Old People’s Home of the Tibetan children’s Village in Choglamsar,
Leh- UT Ladakh

Number of residents: 60 elderly persons
Average age 70 years old and above
Number of rooms: 45.
The elderly home opened its door in 1976.
Most of its residents belong to the early generation of refugees, directly from Tibet, and in many cases, there is no family to look after them.
The Tibetan Children Village, the first charitable organization on the terrain, took the responsibility to care for these aged refugees.
In the retired home complex, the buildings were constructed with traditional materials, like mud bricks and straw, wooden floor and ceiling, lime painting and small windows with single glass, which is doubled with clothes or plastic sheet during the heavy cold period.
These materials are perfectly adapted to the high altitude climate and keep the rooms dry, the walls are breathing, best and ecological solution from all point of view.
Room measurement: 3, 50 m x 4, 00 mx 3, 00 m which allows to heat up the little space rapidly.

In the small buildings, the rooms are lined up behind a sunny full glass and closed veranda and this position provide the first insulation.

The ceiling were doubled, which gives us the second layer of protection to keep the heat.

Each room is equipped with a small stove in which one burns animal waste.
When the cold arrives at the end of October, the fire is lit until the month of March next year. At the end of the winter, the stoves are cleaned and stored.

The sunny veranda provide an extra room where the elderlies can come together in the cold winter.

To heat the rooms of the retirement home during the winter/ from November to March/, we need 400 bags of animal dung (animal waste like Rilma & Digpa), which come from the Chang-thang region most of the time.
These bags weights, with their packaging, around 50kg and cost around 200 rupees each: 2, 50 € / 2, 50 $ / 2, 20 £ bag
A full truck transport is 26.000 rupees
/ 330 € /and takes around three days.
Please, keep in mind that the prices being raised constantly, because of the world's economic situation.

1$= 79, 67 Indian rupees Total: 1000 $
