Project Location: TCV, Choglamsar-Ladakh
Project launching: March 2021 (with annual renewal)
Update: On the 22.th of May 2021, the necessary sum to instal the solar powered water heater was collected
The OPH and functioning:
The elderly home opened its door in 1976.
Most of its residents belong to the early generation of refugees, directly from Tibet, and in many cases, there is no family to look after them.
The Tibetan Children Village, the first charitable organization on the terrain, took the responsibility to care for these aged refugees.
Our OPH shelter 60 elderlies from the age of 65 and above.
We have 45 rooms, some occupied by two, some by one person.
We employ one cook, two nurses and four caretakers.
We also feed a small flock, which was rescued from the butchers: so now, we can produce dairy products for our Elders and use the animal manure as fuel during the winter.
Many of our residents participate voluntarily, depending on their physical ability, in everyday tasks: laundry, cooking, cleaning, preparation, etc.
They assert : it is good to stay active; it is very beneficial for the health and spirit.

The kitchen serves three times per day simple but best-suited meals, financed from the TCV's budget, cloths and shelter come through individual sponsorships.

The chef in action
Due to the rise in prices of the first necessities in the market, it becomes impossible to cover all these expenses only from the sponsorship fees.
Ladakhi markets are more expensive because of geographic isolation and distant transport.

Our budget mainly goes to the children; therefore, we need to find sources to keep our elderlies home running.
Extend life at any cost is pointless. What is the most important is to create a peaceful environment by providing shelter, food and care for those who become dependent on us for their remaining days.
We are committed to caring for our elders, and to fulfil the task, we need your help.
All the details of our needs are listed in a table with local prices given in Indian currency.
These needs are the most elementary: Gas bottles, medical care, food and funeral expenses.
Everything is purchased locally. In this way, we contribute to the local economy.
We continually strive to improve the living conditions of our elderly.
The table here below shows the expenditure to be incurred:

Project presentation of the installation of solar energy powered water heater
at the Old People's Home in Choglamsar (Ladakh)
At present, 400 litres of boiled water per day are used for drinking, cooking. The water gets heated up by gas.
The OPH is located in the Indus Valley in the Ladakh region.
Ladakh is blessed with 300 sunny days per year and high clear air, which make this one of the best regions in the world for solar energy.
The Tibetan Children's Village, which runs the retirement home, is planning the installation of a solar-powered water heater with a capacity of 500 litres boiled water per day to reduce the annual budget for cooking.

The main advantage of this choice is that after investing in the equipment and installation, the OPH will have almost no expenses related to hot water production (only maintenance and some regular gasket changes).
The company Universal Solar Systems (numerous installation references in northern India), which has already installed solar lighting at the TSA Camp in Mcleod Ganj, was contacted and made a serious proposal (quote with all technical details attached).
The proposed water heating system is of Indian manufacture and comes with a ten-year warranty.
Total cost of the installation is 166 900 Indian rupees
Cost with application of exchange rates on the 7 April 2021:
1€ = 88,52 Indian rupees Total : 1 885,50 €
1$ = 74,42 Indian rupees Total : 2 242,70 $
1£ = 102,25 Indian rupees Total : 1 632,30 £
